The School of Civil and Environmental Engineering of Harbin Institute of Technology (HIT), Shenzhen provides education on two primary disciplines, civil engineering and environmental science & engineering, and offers both bachelor and master programs. The civil engineering discipline, listed as the national key primary discipline, consists of three national key secondary disciplines: structural engineering, municipal engineering and disaster prevention and mitigation engineering, and started to provide doctoral program in civil engineering in 1998. The environmental science & engineering program offers one national key secondary discipline – environmental engineering and started to provide doctoral program in environmental science & engineering in 2000. In the most recent national discipline assessment of higher education institutions, the two disciplines both ranked the second among all assessed institutions.
The School is home to six key municipal laboratories of Shenzhen involved in the research fields of structural vibration control and intelligent monitoring, new structural system of civil engineering and disaster resilience design, windstorm-related disaster in urban areas and comprehensive prevention and mitigation of disaster, new materials and smart materials for civil engineering, urban geological disaster prevention and control, urban water resources and water environment, air pollution control, environmental and ecological restoration, urban waste recycling, etc.
The school has 62 full-time faculty members. Most of them have overseas learning or working experience related to leading educational methodologies and cutting-edge technologies, capable of turning students into innovative researchers and engineering application talents.
Over the past five years, the School has undertaken 200-plus research projects, including National Science and Technology Major Projects, key projects funded by the National Science & Technology Pillar Program, sub-projects under the National High Technology Research and Development Program (also known as “863 Program”), key projects and general projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, projects supported by the Natural Science Foundation of Guangdong Province, and fundamental research projects of Shenzhen Municipality. We have also provided services to a host of local government departments including traffic administration, water affairs administration, and housing and construction administration, and launched 80-plus major horizontal research projects with a funding over 120 million yuan.
Civil Engineering
According to the 4th Discipline Evaluation of Chinese Colleges and Universities, the civil engineering program of HIT made its way to the A bracket (top 2%-5%). With a special weight on construction engineering, students could learn more about geotechnical and underground engineering, civil engineering materials, bridge engineering and other fields through optional courses and graduation projects.
The civil engineering discipline has 32 full-time faculty members, including one academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, one member of the Thousand and Ten Thousand Talent Project, one recipient of the Science Foundation for the Excellent Youth Scholars run by the Ministry of Education of China, and four members of the Program for New Century Excellent Talents in University. The teaching faculty have successively provided research, consulting and technical services to an array of major landmark projects: Beijing Water Cube, Pingan International Finance Center in Shenzhen, KK100 of Shenzhen, Shenzhen Baoan International Airport Terminal 3, Shenzhen Bay Sports Center, Shenzhen North Railway Station, Shenzhen Civil Center, Guangzhou TV Tower (New), Guangzhou International Finance Center, Guangdong Olympic Sports Center, and Zhuhai Opera House.
Civil engineering is one of the pillar industries fueling the Chinese economy. Our program is dedicated to producing graduates who demonstrate profound scientific and academic attainments. The education foundation also offers scholarships to over 30% of our undergraduate students every year. With a good command of basic theories and expertise in civil engineering as well as their creativity, leadership and global vision, our students are trained to deliver technical and managerial performance in such sectors as survey, design, construction, project management, development, and research.
Nowadays, China sees its urbanization in full swing. As urbanization keeps expanding, civil engineering has been enjoying the highest employment for many years in a row and such talents will be in great demand for the several decades to come. Therefore, graduates of related majors present promising prospects in both employment and financial return, and hold huge potential for career development.
Environmental Science & Engineering
According to the 4th Discipline Evaluation of Chinese Colleges and Universities, the environmental science & engineering program of HIT was again listed in the A+ bracket (top 2%).
Certified by the China Engineering Education Accreditation Association, the teaching faculty of the environmental engineering discipline, led by Prof. Ren Nanqi, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, consists of nearly 20 high-caliber experts officially recognized by the Chinese government or the municipal government of Shenzhen. And 90% of them have an overseas background either in study or work.
The environmental engineering program has established five national or municipal research facilities: State Key Laboratory of Urban Water Resource and Environment (Shenzhen), Shenzhen Key Laboratory of Water Resource Application and Environmental Pollution Control, Key Lab of Shenzhen for Organic Pollution Prevention and Control, Shenzhen Engineering Laboratory for Microalgal Bioenergy, and Shenzhen Municipal Public Technical Service Platform for Urban Waste Reuse and Energy Recovery.
The program combines science and engineering in a cross-disciplinary approach. It is aimed to produce graduates with exemplary communication skills, humanistic spirit and global vision, just as needed by the Chinese drive to make ecological progress. These graduates are expected to grow into leading technicians and managerial experts who can tackle with complicated environmental issues.
They demonstrate high proficiency in many fields including water pollution control and water resource protection, air pollution control, waste reduction and recycling, environmental biotechnology, environmental testing and application, and environmental planning and administration.
Our students and alumni are active in teaching, research, engineering design, technical development, environmental management and planning, and other jobs at higher education institutions, research institutes, design agencies, water supply and drainage groups, and many other sectors including environmental protection, chemical engineering, light industry, energy and pharmaceuticals.
