【土木与环境工程学院 宣】(大会组委会/文、图)From November 1-3, 2023, the 5th International Water Association Resource Recovery Conference (IWARR2023) was successfully held in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province. Organized by Harbin Institute of Technology (Shenzhen), Shenzhen Environment and Water Group, and IWA Resource Recovery Cluster, the conference highlighted the urgent need for sustainable development in the face of escalating global climate change challenges.
The conference brought together top experts and industry leaders from around the world. Over 1,000 attendees participated on-site, while an impressive 500,000 joined online. The opening ceremony, chaired by Professor Aijie Wang of Harbin Institute of Technology (Shenzhen), emphasized the critical importance of resource recycling for sustainable global development.
IWARR2023 marked the first time the conference was held in Asia, particularly in the Greater Bay Area. Themed "Resource Recycling: From Innovation to Practice," the conference featured 10 thematic forums, 5 academic workshops, 10 plenary speeches, 35 keynote lectures, 27 invited talks, 60 oral presentations, and 172 poster presentations.
In the opening ceremony on Nov 1, 2023, some invited guests delivered welcome remarks, including Prof. Huang Yudong (the President of Harbin Institute of Technology (Shenzhen)), Prof. Ana Soares and Dr. Olaf van de Kolk (IWA Resource Recovery Cluster), Dr. Kara Vairavamoorthy (IWA Executive Director), and Mr. Yu Huarong (Secretary of the China Invention Association). Prof. Willy Verstraete from Ghent University, Belgium, recounted the ten-year development journey of the IWA Resource Recovery Cluster. Finally, as per Xi Jinping's vision, Shenzhen's Vice Mayor Zhang Hua underlined Shenzhen's commitment to water conservation and recycling in its pursuit of ecological civilization.
On Nov 3, 2023, Prof. Yu Tao from Harbin Institute of Technology (Shenzhen) chaired the closing ceremony. A series of awards were unveiled. The conference’s Best Oral Presentation Award and Best Poster Presentation Award were announced by Prof. Ren Nanqi and Prof. Mark van Loosdrecht, respectively. The IWA Resource Recovery Cluster Best Practice Award finalists and the winner were also declared. Finally, Professor Korneel Rabaey of Ghent University announced that the next conference will be held in 2025 in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands.
IWARR2023 was a testament to the collaborative efforts in advancing sustainable water solutions and marks a significant milestone in the global journey toward sustainable development.
